The Downside of the Trading Life.

by Raghee Horner on July 4

It’s not all “pros” when it comes to the trading life. Don’t get me wrong – I love trading forex, stocks, futures! I love the research, the charts, trading software – but working form a home office in a market that never sleeps (forex) can wreck havoc on your health.

Traders are not immune from often sedentary lifestyle that many traditional office workers have. As much as I may try to be more active, when the markets get moving, or my speaking schedule gets hectic, writing new books (I’m working on my third), or designing new software or videos…I can spend a lot of hours in front of the computer. I love doing it, my waistline often does not.

So I m begin pro-active. The years of being a trading author and teacher have been rewarding but it’s time I take some major action to take care of my health. This is something that I think all of us can do and I’m going to be sharing my strategies as I look to bring a happy balance between my current trading/speaking/writing schedule and fitting some more training/exercise time.

Some people may not know that alongside my trading I also run three businesses. I know when I am exercising/training my trading is better…I know when I am in better shape my business seem to run smoother and more organized. Often better health is the center of success. I know I have experienced that in the part.

It’s time to bring that back!

So I’ll share with you my training and nutrition. I have a deadline…all goals should have a realistic completion date otherwise they’re just dreams. I sure don’t have anything against dreaming – when I am asleep! When I am awake, it’s about goals! So this morning I have chosen a program that appeals to me and my philosophy on training. It will allow me to train on the road and at home with minimal required equipment. I bought the P90X program and I’ll let you know how it goes…if I am feeling daring enough, maybe I’ll share a few videos. I have quite a few friends who are in amazing shape…they look great and they are fit and it’s what they are telling me they are used. I have always had an interest in training and nutrition.

I also got the Wii Fit when it first came out because it just looks like a whole lotta fun and I think it will be a great way to have a light workout and have a little fun.

So that’s the story and I hope as I find a new interest in take care of the non-trading side of my life, it will inform and inspire you to do the same!

Raghee, please let us know how this works out for you. I’ve been toying with the idea of using P90X for sometime, but I have yet to speak with anyone who’s actually used it.

Hi Raghee,

I have heard some good things about P90X. Just about any training program will work if it is done consistently. The best workout program done inconsistently will not work as well as a mediocre program that is followed very regularly (just like trading systems). I know what you mean when you say “It’s time to bring that back!” We all struggle with consistency from time to time. I primarily do gym workouts – resistance training and have been at that game for 27 years. I have learned to train smarter instead of harder, which is essential when the joints start to ache. I have found Beverly International’s “Joint Care” to be a great supplement. All their stuff is great. Actually, the owner taught me all I know regarding weight training. I met him when I was 16 and he used Bev Intl supplements then. Now he owns the company — Awesome!

I heard your interview with Rob Booker this morning. I have been working with Rob for a while now. I was great hearing more about your trading. It was also great to see that you ride a sport bike. You are among the coolest of the cool. Take care.

Thanks Bill, you’re too kind. I dunno about *coolest of the cool* BUT I know that I do often feel like the Grand Poobah of Geeky Traders!

I have a couple sport bikes and I am addicted to riding. I gather from your name your a re Honda guy. That’s awesome…my first bike was a 600 Hurricane – the old “jellybean”.

The P90X has been good to me so far and I am super motivated since I am going to be on the cover of my next book.

I will be sure to check out the Beverly Intl. supps. Thanks for the tip my friend.
