I wanted to share an email reply with you all to a good friend of mine who’s learning the ropes of trading. It concerns risk and trade management for small positions or even a single lot. This email was about a AUD/JPY entry on teh 15-minute chart that was taken at 74.91.

“Ok buddie, here’s the mechanics of trailing a stop and technically it must be in a position where you have more than one lot…

So if you moved the risk-based s/l to a break-even s/l that means that your initial profit target was hit…so a small profit is realized and then the remainder of the position is break-even. Btw, b/e stops are 3-5 pips below your entry trigger price.

One-lot trading is tough because we tend to want to squeeze to much from it…and thereby break the *rules* of trailing a stop.

Make sense?

So with a 74.91 long, 75.20 or even the prior resistance at 75.40 would be an out but I’m guessing neither were hit before you trailed to break-even and got stopped out right?

I think you’re getting the entries right, but (I’m guessing. Correct me if I’m wrong) you’re squeezing and messing with the timing on when you begin to trail a stop. I’d rather you cheat in than jump right to a break-even when you have not realized a profit yet.”
